Justin Dywer + Betty Sargeant. Multi-award winning media art + digital design.

Plugin Human: Betty Sargeant + Justin Dwyer

PluginHUMAN is an art-design activation led by Australian artists Dr Betty Sargeant and Justin Dwyer. They have exhibited in Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia. PluginHUMAN develop immersive real-time media art using light and audio to augment site-specific installations. They construct three-dimensional sculptural works and use TouchDesigner, Ableton Live and customised hardware to allow audiences to have an impact on the final creation. PluginHUMAN display an acute understanding of the roles that technology plays within contemporary existence. Their work focuses on how art and technology can help people be more socially and physically engaged. They aim to bring about greater connections between people and machines through playful design.

PluginHUMAN currently holds the creator-in-residence position at the Exertion Games Lab, Centre for Game Design Research, RMIT University, Australia. They are collaborating with the lab to create a series of participatory and interactive art installations whereby the interface becomes integrated with the human body. In 2017 Betty Sargeant and Justin Dwyer won the Premier’s Design Award (Australia) for their participatory media art installation The Storytelling Machine. This is a custom designed automated system that instantly animates audiences’ drawing and texts. Audience contributions are incorporated into a randomly generated international collective story.
